Permission to Shoot - FAQs

What is a Permission to Shoot?

A Permission to Shoot is a document which can be used to hunt rabbit, fox and hare on Permanent Timber Production Zone (PTPZ) land. It is also a document which can be used to obtain a Firearms Licence in Tasmania.

Do I need a Permission to Shoot if I already have a Recreational Game Licence?

No. A Recreational Game Licence enables hunting of game species on Permanent Timber Production Zone (PTPZ) land. More information on Recreational Game Licences is available on the DPIPWE website.

How do I get a Permission to Shoot?

You can get a Permission to Shoot from STT online via our website or by visiting your nearest STT regional office.

How do I get a Permission to Shoot if I do not have access to online services?

You can still get a Permission to Shoot from STT if you do not have access to online services. If you visit your nearest regional office during opening hours, our staff will assist you to purchase a Permission to Shoot.

Where can I go hunting?

Sustainable Timber Tasmania restricts recreational hunting access to certain areas of PTPZ land. This enables Sustainable Timber Tasmania to manage safety around current and upcoming forest operations, leased areas and to manage environmental reserves. Sustainable Timber Tasmania does not permit recreational hunting activities across all PTPZ. 

We have been working to make new maps to identify the areas available across PTPZ where recreational hunting for the public IS permitted. Therefore, recreational hunting is permitted ONLY in the purple areas highlighted on the hunting maps available on the Hunting page of our website.  

We are continuing to make more recreational hunting maps which will be available on this page of our website in the future. 

Do I need a new Permission to Shoot if I have already got an old one?

No.

What am I able to hunt?

A Permission to Shoot on PTPZ permits you to hunt rabbit, fox and hare during daylight hours, provided you hold a valid firearms licence and registered firearm.

If you are looking to hunt game species you are required to have a Recreational Game Licence from DPIPWE.

What does a Permission to Shoot do?

A Permission to Shoot allows you to hunt rabbit, fox and hare on PTPZ. You cannot hunt these species on PTPZ identified areas without a Permission to Shoot from STT.

The Permission to Shoot does not permit you to hunt without a registered firearm or a current firearms licence.

Do I need a Permission to Shoot if I have a current firearms licence?

Only if you do not hold a current Recreational Game Licence. A Permission to Shoot is not a firearms licence. It is permission to shoot rabbit, fox and hare on PTPZ.
